A loss of renters led to bigger problems…

I wanted to do some upgrades to my boarding house.  I used my credit cards to pay for the renovation. But then, one by one, my renters were moving out.  Their rent money was supposed to help pay off my credit card.  I was left with 5 maxed-out cards by the year’s end.  Not to mention, I owed on my cell phone bill and back taxes.

I constantly avoided collection calls.  My life was scary.  I couldn’t go on trips with friends anymore.  I was in trouble!  I felt mad, scared, and isolated.  I owed around $11,500 and I paid as much as I could, but I was barely making the minimum payments.  It was hopeless.  I was considering bankruptcy!

Learning life-long skills…

I’ve learned to live on a budget and only use my debit card.  Before, I would charge things on my credit card and say to myself, “I will pay later.”  I lived paycheque-to-paycheque, only to pay back a debt that wasn’t shrinking – it was growing with interest.  No more credit cards.  I’m still here; I don’t need credit cards to fill the gap in my life.  Thank you Consolidated Credit for teaching me how to live without credit cards, and realizing the difference between wants and needs in life.

Some words of advice…

Years ago, I was not happy person.  I was always afraid to answer the phone – I was afraid it was collectors calling. Today, I can say that I took responsibility for my debt.  To everyone who’s struggling with debt, you can end it and take back your life.  Life is not supposed to be about keeping up with the Joneses.  Soon I will be debt FREE!  I’ve never been able to say that.
