Precarious personal finance is a top issue in the upcoming election

As Canadians wade through the seemingly endless stream of advertisements and platform promises of the longest federal election in modern history, the terms “middle class” and “Canadian families” often come up.

The political parties are spending a lot of time and effort on the topic, but just how serious is the situation?  Are Canadians actually buried in debt, or is it just a political talking point?
