Household debt is through the roof, people are living paycheque-to-paycheque, and it seems like there are more demands than ever on the Canadian household budget.

A big strain is auto loans, with dealers offering tantalizing deals to encourage Canadians to go for the newer, sleeker, “better” cars.

Jeff Schwartz, executive director of Consolidated Credit Counseling Services of Canada, spoke with The Globe and Mail about how now, more than ever, Canadians need to learn to live within their means.
